Projects exist in all industries and any size of business. With the rush of day-to-day activity, it is often difficult to separate project work from daily operations or regular, ongoing work. When work, that is project work in nature, gets executed as a collection of tasks without proper planning, organizations incur higher costs, deadlines get missed and stakeholders get frustrated. In this workshop, we will discuss real-world situations to teach you how to identify projects vs operational activities and the issues that can result by misidentification. Once you identify that you have a project, it’s time to initiate or start the project off right! We will discuss creating a project charter and defining scope. A charter formally authorizes the project and conveys from the business sponsor’s perspective the purpose of the project, the project’s objectives, and desired deliverables. The scope statement further defines the desired business value and deliverables and what activity is included and not included in the project. This structured approach will help ensure everyone shares the same vision and helps you plan and execute your project more effectively.
You may wonder what is a WBS? Well, a solid WBS is a key tool for the entire project plan and done at the right level of detail it can help you negotiate scope and resource trade-offs. It’s the one thing that no good project should be without. In this session we will teach you what the WBS is and discuss building effective work packages at the right level of detail. This tool helps you plan all the necessary work, and only the necessary work needed to meet project objectives. It is also the basis for your project schedule which guides the flow of your work to ensure things are done in the right order. We will have fun with it too using the software tool Trello to create a WBS in class.
